Hi Guys

I've just bought myself an iPhone 4 off eGay (quite a decent price too!) to upgrade from my old 3G finally but have a quick question about Facetime and iMessage.

Both my iPhone 4 and iPad 2 are setup to use my Apple ID for iMessage and Facetime. If I send a message from my iPad 2 to one of my friends that has an iPhone 3GS/4/4S then send another message from my iPhone 4 to that same person (both will be using iMessage), what will happen on the other end?

Will my friend see 2 seperate message threads in his message app and be able to reply to both accordingly, or will it group them all together forcing any replies to go to only one of the devices?

Thanks in advance :)

It'll be in one message since both devices use the same ID and the reply will be sent to whichever device is active at the time of sending (if you leave the original message active on the iPad it'll most likely move over to the iPhone when you send the second message).

If you had the iPhone set to use the phones number then it is most likely it'd be separate (but then I'm not sure about this since if this friend has both the phone number and the apple ID in the same contact record then it might sill be in one message).

They should appear as if they came from the same place, and any replies you receive will appear on both devices.

well the thing that got me thinking about it was that someone sent me an iMessage on the iPhone, but he doesn't have my email address I use for my Apple ID. So I started wondering what would happen if I then sent him an iMessage from my iPad (which would use my email address). would any reply he sends appear on both my iPad and iPhone or only on my iPad?

Think I need to do some tests with a friend lol

Should appear on both devices. Under iMessage it shows "Receive at.." at then you have your phone number and Apple ID. This should be configured on both devices so you get it at both

This is how I assume it works. I only have a 4S at the moment so no iPad to test with. Nothing will beat the real world test with your friend.

Be interested to know the outcome as might be getting an iPad 2 soon
