iMessage problems

I have moved back to an iPhone, but can't get iMessage to work on it. On my iPad it works, and the settings are the same on both devices but on the iPhone I can't send anything. The only difference that I can possibly see is that the Apple ID on the iPad is an @me.com whereas on my iPhone it is @icloud.com. I had understood that they were one and the same, has anyone else had this problem?
 
I had this problem and it turned out that my date and time was not set to Automatically. Turned this on and it worked fine afterwards. Also check your send receive settings in messages and make sure your number is associated with i message
 
Turn off iMessage on your phone. Restart the iPhone and then re-enable iMessage making sure your phone number and email addresses are correct.
