Hi all...

I moved into a house where we don't have gas so I have an 170 liter immersion heater for hot water, I'm a single male and at the moment I heat up the water in the morning for an hour to have a wash and again in the afternoon for the washing...

It's an osowater direct 170 liter tank and it has two heating elements, I've read that I can/should turn off the bottom one and the top one should be able to heat up enough water in the tank for for my needs... is this true?

Try it?

Back when I had an immersion heater it only ever heated the top half and that was generally enough. If we ever ran out we'd stick it back on for half an hour.

Are you on E7 or similar or just using day rate electricity all the time?

I think orginally the house has storage heaters and E7, but since then it's been gutted and I'm on normal day rate now. I've replaced the heating with a cloud wifi heating system but never looked at the water tank. Once it breaks down, I'll replace it with something smaller, but the tank has two fuse boxes with two cables going to it so I would assume there's a top and bottom elements, my timer unit doesn't seem to have the abilty to control each one separately or two together else I would try that first.

You can get heat via your internet connection now!

Wonders never cease....! ;) :p

So you are using full rate electricity for all your heating?? (Gulp!)

However you do it, that's gonna hurt! Which part of your HWC you are using is going to be insignificant compared to your other costs.

However, as you describe it. Just use the top heater. And do not bother switching it on or off just leave it on all the time (Well, during the winter anyway) Any heat loss will contribute towards the general house heating. Since all your lecky costs the same, it doesn't matter where the heat comes from.

Thanks... I'll give it a try on the timer.

I'm hardly at home... don't burger me thou, I have an ip camera system.. ;)
up at 6 out by 7 then back home for tea and out again till I go to sleep...

The rooms are well insulated, apart from downstairs as there are no walls. I can have the heating on in a room go to another and it be like a ice box. I tend to keep the bathroom shower rail on as it's all tiled and more of a wet room with a walk in shower, so it's freezing in winter..

The insulation is built into my tank... it’s just bare metal... is it worth getting it an extra jacket?

I used to live in a similar flat.

I had a shower the directly heated the water from a cold feed and then just boiled the kettle for the washing up, so never used the immersion heater.

I have a similar set up, the lower switch on mine doesn't do anything though as I assume it would only activate if I was on a dual-rate meter/tariff.

You can get timer switches that replaced the fused spur switches but as I rent, I'm not about to go spending money or messing with the electrics!
