Hope this is the correct section for this query.

Anyway, I am planning a new build which, although not strictly an HTPC (P150 case), will be used a lot for media viewing, so I was considering adding in an iMon VFD unit, giving me both remote control and an HTPC-style display, plus some media software, all of which I think will complement the rig considering what I'll be using it for.

I'm just looking for some opinion on how good this thing is in practice, cos it seems pretty great in theory, plus any possible alternatives.

Hi have recently purchased an imon vfd, and i am very pleased with it. I had no installation problems, and the remote is pretty easy to program for different functions. It is not an essential purchase, but if you have the money I'd recommend getting one :)

If you click this link, it shows the VFD in my rig!

Oh, I don't know many alternatives. This product hits two birds with one stone, as it's a vfd and a remote all in one.

That looks pretty sweet. What's it like in use, do you use the media software that comes with it, as I am torn between just using the iMon stuff, or getting something like MCE or Sage? I will be using the pc as both my main machine and for mp3 listening, watching divx and PVR, which is why I want a remote and some better, more versatile software than WMP11 or VLC. I take it XP pro and a separate media program is better?

The bundled software is good, however i would definitely recommend looking at the product specs, and downloading the latest software available from soundgraph.com

The software does run much like MCE, however I tend to use PowerDVD and Winamp usually. I'm not saying that the bundled software isn't as good, I'm just used to using those software packages and the IMON can be set up to control any software you want, even control the mouse etc.

I haven't got MCE or Sage, so I can't confirm whether the unit is compatible with either of these. But the bundled software does seem to be able to do a wide range of functions.
