Ok Folks.

Got a new Sony HDR TG7 Camcorder to open up on xmas day and wonder what software i should use on my Mac for it as I know the bundle software not for Mac.

At the moment I have iMovie 08 will it work? Or should I upgrade to iMovie 09 or get Final Cut Express but I rather not spend anything yet if iMovie 08 will do it?? ie compatibility

Why not see how you get on with iMovie 08 and then upgrade to Final Cut Express if you're not happy with iMovie?

Only you can really know how advanced your editing needs are. iMovie 08 is pretty decent, we use it at work to edit PR stories. You'll be able to do transitions, cuts etc pretty easily.

It's only when you start getting a bit more technical that it might be worth looking at upgrading.

Ok thanks and i wonder if it works with Sony HDR TG7 Camcorder? Does iMovie support AVCHD Format do you know? As all i can find is about iMovie 09 but like to know if 08 has this support if so then I love to try 08 first as i am sure it will do plenty for me

'08 supports AVCHD yes. It's a very good app but the upgrade to '09 is well worth it, it adds some nice stuff in.

I'd definitely stick with iMovie at first, FCE is excellent but vastly more complicated to use, iMovie is great for beginning and casual work. If you're doing home movies and stuff it's not only good enough, it's perfect.

I've found Sony cams do tend to work nicely with it as well.

09 is great for basic editing but if you plan on doing anything too fancy, Final Cut Express will be an investment you won't regret :)

What bugs me is that my Sony Camcorder got a built in GPS.. Is this more for still pictures rather than Filming? I guess iMovie and FCE does not have GPS tagging? I know iPhoto 09 does but that just for stills..
