Do you have to pay import tax on a item bought from Brazil ?

Item is worth about £130

Yes.

But some items are zero rated, such as books.

After import duty/vat/handling fees, etc expect about 22% on top, so around a £30 bill to pay.

Just 20% VAT if I remember rightly. If the item is over £135 your item is libel for duty but that depends on what the item is.

So it depends what the item is, and who is the courier. Some will handle all the fees for you and then charge you for the privilege, others will hold it and still charge you.

Generally it's 20% VAT and 3-5% customs, plus a "handling" charge from the courier of about £10.

Often though sellers will declare a low value, for example I recently bought something for $120 and I paid no tax as it was declared at a value of $5.
