hi all

right looks like im going for a drive up to OCUK HQ in stoke tomorrow to get my components for my new build (oo the excitement)

big question, hopefully my last.

8800GTS or 8800GTX is is worth the extra cost to go from GTS to GTX?

cheers guys

Loki

The jump from the GTS to GTX is dependant upon what monitor and therefore what resolution you wish to drive.

If you are running say a 24" screen at 1920x1200 then I would advise going for the GTX for the extra shader power and the large frame buffer (768MB).

..but being so close to the release of the R600 (ATI HD2900) then I would consider pausing for a while to see how prices level out. If you still wish then to stick with NVidia then you, hopefully, might see some price reductions.

IF you are like me and you cannot wait, then just think it's only money, happiness is far more important so grab the GTX :D

Also take into account what CPU you currently have and make sure you are providing the GTX/GTS with enough power to achieve it's full potential.

Yea I would wait for the 2900 series from ATi to come out, maybe the next Nvidia series will be out around the same time?

well its going to be a fresh build so the cpu u will be a E6600.

erm my screen is some rubbish pretty small flat screen job i got with a time pc years ago, maybe instead of gettin the GTX i should use the money to get a new screen? what do u think?

thanks

8800 GTS 640 and a nice 22" screen = job done :)

Think about what size screen and what corresponding resolution you are going to get.

In this day and age I would advise going for a 16:10 widescreen TFT.

Therefore I would match the cards to the screen resolutions accordingly (I am thinking current games and future DX10 games here to give you some future proofing!):

19" 1440x900 8800 GTS 320MB

20">22" 1680x1050 8800 GTS 640MB (the 320MB will be ok currently, but you would have to watch how much AA you use, the smaller frame buffer may struggle with new titles)

24"+ 1920x1200 8800 GTX 768MB - definetly required, the GTS 640 would be ok for some games, but you would not be able to use much, if any, AA. Future titles such as Crysis which will be more shader heavy will benefit from the increased stream processers of the GTX

Hope this helps.

You mention that you have a not-so-good small time TFT at the moment (probably 15"/17" ?) So an upgrade to a 20"-22" would be very nice, coupled with the 640MB GTS you would be in good shape.

Just built new vista 64 comp, with a 20.1" viewsonic and a 640mb gts. Both BF2 and cs:source run maxed out at 1680x1050.

Happy as a pig in NO SWEARING :D :D
