Importing photos into OS X

I used to be able to just connect any old camera to my iBook and it will let me download photos into the Pictures folder and into date directories depending on when the photo was taken. Just got my macbook and have explored Image Capture but it doesn't seem to have the 'download into date folders' option?

Any ideas?

Use iPhoto?

I don't want everything stored on iPhoto though. There was a way I used to be able to do it on my iBook, it would put photos in folders like 18_12_2005 etc.
