I'm fed up of slow internet due to a certain family member downloading too much - be it torrents or off 4OD.

Is there somehow a way that I can limit her downloads, or even limit the download speed via the router, or any software? The router in question is a Linksys WRT54G

And before you say go tell her to stop, we've all tried - stops for a few minutes and then starts again.

Tomato or DD-WRT are good custom firmwares that provide QoS functionality. This is what you want.

I live in a house of 13 student and it just about does the job, torrents are pretty much banned in the house though as the amount of connections they suck up pulls everyone down. The most effective of way of keeping things reasonable i found was limiting bandwitdh to torrents firstly, but also giving ACK packets a low priority. This can adversely affect gaming but no where near as much as a running torrent would.

Google is your friend, the tomato wiki is a great source of info.

stick a host entry on her laptop that directs the www.4od.com (or what ever) to another site, she will never work it out..

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

you would add

1.1.1.1 www.whatereversite.com

to the bottom of the file...

this totally block access to the site or if you put a ip of another site in it will send her there

as she finds other sites to download from add them to the list..

jsut make sure you delete the my recent documents entry if it puts one in..
