Bought a Dell Vostro 1700 with a 256mb 8600GT.I didn't buy the lappy for games more for Lightroom photoshop etc...

CPU is Penryn 8300
3GB Ram

I decided to install COD4 on it to see and I'm quitely impressed with the performance running at 1440x900

It can certainly be my spare GFX card in between upgrades.:p

Should improve more when I get a solid state drive for it.:p

I assume your aware that all Nvidia 8400 and 8600 class mobile gfx parts are faulty?.....

If thats the case and it dies then I'm covered under a 3 yr warranty with DELL so I couldn't give a hoot!:p

Its amazing that DELL for instance are knowingly shipping faulty Chips with their current laptops!

Newer chips will be out then and gaming on my lappy hardly ever occurs.

Overclock it! The chip in my Inspiron 1520 clocks pretty well and doesn't get much hotter, makes it enough for settings on high at 1280x800.

The desktop ones are faulty too, it's just that the desktop chips run cooler because of good airflow, something which is missing in a laptop. It's something to do with the heating up and cooling down that kills it IIRC, Xbox 360 style.

I'm not sure if I should be concerned with the "faulty" chip designs or not, we're only running one laptop at the moment with an Nvidia chip (8400) but the warranty on it is technically void, even without that we'd have under a year left...

IMO, even the 8400 is a nice chip, not had a chance to use the 8600 but user results from these forums have looked alright. Graphics failure in a laptop is extremely gutting though, just don't want to have a nightmare replacement part issue to go through.
