Currently it takes my PC 45 mins to encode 25-30 mins of VOB files to DIVX. Looking to lower this as much as possible and so wish for a small upgrade. Current specs;

3700+ SD 939 @2.2ghz
2 x 1gb DDR 400
X1800xt
HDDs (4 in total)
450w Hiper (old school not blow up in your face ones)

Im encoding all this to create more space to allow more files and make it easier to view/back up over network. I currently have 265 hours of data to encode which at current rates would take ~400 hours or 16 days .

So any ideas what would be best value to go for?

have you had a go with ati's avivo video encoder?

other than that, a new cpu is the obvious. as for best value i dont know personally :p

Just had a look at the ati thing and it increases the file sizes!

Misses said i can have upto 250/300 if needbe, less if possible. Will be keeping current Retail XP

I swear im missing something.

Don't know how similar your encoding routine would be to mine but to give you an indication i compared my old s939 rig to my new e6600 rig when i got it.

I ripped an identical dvd using clone dvd and then re-encoded it's large 8gb file to fit on a standard 4.7gb single layer dvd using nero recode 2.

My socket 939 was specced like this:

Opteron 165 @ 3ghz
DFI SLi-DR
2gb OCZ low latency PC4000
160gb Samsung spinpoint

The C2D rig was:

e6600 @ 2.4ghz - stock
Gigabyte P965 DS3
2gb Geil PC6400
160gb Samsung spinpoint

The AMD took just over 35 minutes to complete the task whilst the e6600 took only 10 minutes.

Needless to say i was somewhat impressed by the added performance. Infact i'd used a 3700+ previously and noticed a big jump when i moved to the AMD opteron dual.

Of course that performance increased even more as i overclocked - the e8500 i have presently should offer twice the performance whilst a mildly clocked quad would seriously cut down encoding time.

Cheers for the rough improvements that will seem amazing!

Two questions with that spec though 1) wouldnt I need DDR2-1066 ram? 2) are there any new mobos that have 2 lots of IDE's?

if it's films and you are ever thinking about using vista, then it needs to be vob files to use the best part of vista media centre

I'm now having to convert all my films I converted to xvid back to vob
It only takes 20mins to copy a dvd to the hdd in vob format. So if taht's a feature you think you would use just get a bigger hdd.

If that's all pointless. Then just get a q6600 a good cooler and overclock.

Well I am using TVersity so DVD (i have the copywrite permision of course) > VOB on HDD > Divx. On current set up it only takes 18 min for a 130min dvd I suppose a bigger HDD or a older PC with lots of HHDs on network
