Fantastic! Just been having a play on my S2 IS, it's very awesome to have RAW shooting on a compact and it isn't *that* slow to write RAWs to the memory card. Plus it can extend the max shutter speed for long exposures and do custom ISOs! I also like all the little features like the DOF calculator etc. Very impressed, my compact may find more uses now...

I wonder if they can actually do this on DSLRs. I always wondered why there wasn't open source firmware for cameras. There has to be soo much you could add and change to a cameras setup. Like lord_scott mentioned about custom ISOs, I would absolutely LOVE that on my D300. If I could set it to ISO10 or something, then I would no longer need my ND filters. :)

Now that would be cool.

To those asking about dslr version (a quote from the CHDK forum) :

2008-04-28 UPDATE: for those who read this thread first time.

- it is possible to run code on camera without firmware modification
- people are working on it

Wicked I had always whished someone clever would start hacking camera firmware and give us features like RAW :) Actually with the RAW ouput where can you process it? Don't Most RAW editors have to be updated for each camera?

There's a little program to convert powershot RAWs to DNG, which you can then import into lightroom / photoshop / whatever. link.
