hi there

my comp is struggling with css, especially in open spaces where i can see afar
xp 2000
1gig geil value 333
6600gt
memory is at 266 i think, same as processor, everything @ stock
i have everything on low and no aa fsaa etc, is there anything i can do to improve my frame rate?
how much improvement would an a64 single core processor give me, maybe a 3700 san diego

cheers

matt

Huge improvement.

However, that memory would hold you back slightly in that you would need to run a divider.

My recommendation would be to try and overclock your existing kit, i.e. raise that FSB and see what you can get out of your RAM/CPU.

A big one, but for your setup you would be better off getting a 3200 or something and investing in some faster RAM, then it would be a pretty balanced system. Unless you do movie coding etc and need the CPU speed?

I'm having a similar prob with CS:S, but HL2 runs ok on a 1024x768 medium settings, which doesn't make much sense to me.

My spec is:
XP 2800
1.25gb RAM 2700 (random memory out of Dad's Advent :p )
x700 Pro 256mb agp
running @ stock

Any ideas?

I recently changed my cpu from a AthlonXP 3000+ to a X2 3800+ and my fps in CSS stress test increased from 82fps to 157fps. So upgrading from a XP 2000+ there should be a bigger increase in speed.
This is using a geforce 6600 (slower than your card). This game isn't optimised for dual core so I would think you would get a similar increase by getting a single core cpu.

my 2.8 cely (:/) with my 9800pro both at stock on the stress test scores.....

1024x768 everything low bi liniar no aa or af = 30.2fps
1024x768 everything high aa 8x af 8x = 29.8 :D

BLOODY CELERON - cant wait to get a decent cpu with this loverrrly card (i know its no x1900 but its a big step from 9200se to 9800pro)

CS:S will be more hungry due to the fact you've got more going on really, though HL2 has to worry about AI, my HL2 on full detail runs far better than CS:S on full detail.

a nice high end 32bit AMD cpu should have HL2 @ max with a 9800pro ;) theyre still good cards to own :)

thanks for the input people :)
i made a mistake, the ram i have is ddr 400 although its only geil i dont really overclock etc anymore so im hoping this will go with a a64 3700.
my monitors refresh is 60 (lg tft) so i really just want all the bells and whistles to run at 60 with a bit of fsaa without getting huge drops in fps.

cheers
