im wanting to dramaticaly improve my laptop sounds as when am at uni im sick of listening to my uni speakers and its onboard sound and even though express slots are the future they arnt making anything for them....(durrr) so ive been looking at some ways to improve the

Creative SoundBlaster Live 24Bit External
Creative Xmod

seem appealing but im not sure wether its money well spent ...... could someone give me an insight into somthing better (more cost effective prefreable "bang for your buck") ......

Can't help, but I was about to post the same thread lol. I'm also in need of improving my laptop's sound but aren't sure where to even start.

there is a M-Audio Audiophile USB external soundcard but it needs a extra plug so not much good on the move, also it would be a large step up from the Creative cards you have listed, so would need some half decent set to speakers to be worth while getting ( its about the £100 mark )
