Hi,

I got an 8mb Connection with UKOnline, and although i get a great connection DSL connects at 8230kbps my ping seems to be pretty bad whcih slows the whole process down..

A ping to - google.co.uk shows: 42ms
- bbc.co.uk: 44ms
- ebay.co.uk: 54ms..

Most HL2 and L4D servers ping at about 90ms..

Anything i can do about this??

Using a Linksys WAG200G ADSL router.

And this is particularly bad?

Most servers I connect to via cable give me 25-60ms. I'd say your ping is OK but not the best.
Run a tracert/tracepath and see where it slows down.

By fragments you mean spikes?? I do get random spikes of 100+ms pings.

Got 28ms to the maidenhead server and 2132kbps.. which wasn't as bad as i had thought.

ON my BE connection i had at my old house with a different router i used to get about 12ms on most UK servers.

It may just be congestion.

Do you regularly reboot your router. That can be a cause also as the exchange can take a number of days to find the exact thoroughput of your line, including ping times.

Nope no mention of line attenuation.. But the status page shows this:

Device Serial No: none
Hareward Version: Unknown
Fast Mode Downstream Rate: 8128 Kbps
Fast Mode Upstream Rate: 448 Kbps

Here is the setup page:

Ahh my bad i didnt see it there:

DSL Status: Connected
DSL Modulation Mode: G.dmt
DSL Path Mode: Fast
Downstream Rate: 8128 kbps
Upstream Rate: 448 kbps
Downstream Margin: 6 db
Upstream Margin: 27 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 28 db
Upstream Line Attenuation: 15.5 db
Downstream Transmit Power: 11 db
Upstream Transmit Power: 19 db

Strange.. It just seems as if the connection is fluctuating a lot.. sometimes a page loads in 1 second.. sometimes the same page take 20 seconds. Almost like its spiking a lot..

Your attenuation and SNR are pretty good. As someone else mentioned, check with your ISP whether interleaving (fastpath) is on or off.

If it is off, ask for it to be switched on.

Interleaving should reduce ping times although it can make your connection unstable. With those stats I would doubt it however.

Look at the stats he posted above from his ADSL router "DSL Path Mode: Fast" he already has interleaving turned off.
