So here's a question.

I moved into a new block of flats last november. ISP said BB speeds up to 24mb and I used to get 16mb easily. Now, I get about 6 if that and the ping is terrible. Xbox pings well over 80ms to get a decent game.

So, could this be because all the flats are occupied now? Before, when I moved in, I was only the 3rd person to be in the block.

Also, I don't have a BT mastersocket. Reading around, there is now a thing called xNTE where BT's wiring ends. Therefore, am I unable to microfilter my wiring to a faceplate (rather than having a micro filter?)

How do I determine the main socket now? Is it the one with the ring capacitor?

TIA

The main socket will be slightly bigger, and if you take the front two screws out the front and remove the faceplate, you will see another socket behind it (where you can connect the router too) which is a test socket.

i was able to gain an extra 2mb (getting me from 16mbps down to 18mbps down just by removing the bell wire from the socket.

This is a very good start, bell wires generally can add abit more noise or interference on the line, and is NOT needed on newer phones unless you got an ancient phone with an old style bell inside.

See this link and well worth doing.

I have removed the bell wire on my main sockets and I had a few extension sockets which still had the bell wire so removed it from the terminals in them too.

See, this is the problem, xNTE removes the need for a test socket. In fact, they no longer exist for new build properties, they are all xNTE.

All my sockets are identical and none of them have the extra socket behind. The only difference is one, in the 2nd bedroom, which has a capacitor on the back of it, I can only assume the ring cap

Sounds like you have the new filtered faceplates that BT use (box that has two ports, one for phone one for DSL). Easiest way to identify the master socket is by finding the 2 copper lines that come in to your house, the master socket will be the first socket that these lead to.

E.G at home, on my living room window seal there is 2 copper cables coming in through the wall (from the outside BT overhead cables) this leads down to a socket on the floor by a back wall, this is my BT master socket.

Can you remove the faceplate to see if it has a bell wire?

All the sockets have a bell wire. I'll be eliminating that for a start.

As I live in a block of flats, finding where the comms enter the actual flat might be quite hard. It looks to me like this is some sort of star topology. I don't have two ports. Each socket is exactly just that, one socket for an RJ11 port. That's why I'm sure I can improve my BB speed if I can work out what is going on
