I am currently working a small project to turn an antiquated neoware thin client (300MHz,128MB) into a jukebox to sit neatly with my hifi and stream from my server.
I have evaluated umpteen options over the last month from DOS to Win95/98 and a huge array of linux distros. Unsurprisingly I ended up going back the one I started with. DSL detects all the slightly obscure hardware (Geode based) and with Mp3blaster does exactly what I want.
My only gripe is the time it takes to boot. Its not horrific but I'm sure it could be better. I have reduced the grub menu timeout and knocked off the dhcp client, which has improved things a bit, but is there anything else I can do? Perhaps reducing the time it takes to probe for hardware?

I am not a complete n00b with regards to linux, but I'm not too hot on the blood and guts of it.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

You sure DSL is the right distro for this sort of thing? Sure, it was the first downsized distro but it's pretty much a dead project, there are many alternatives. See Slitaz, Tiny/Micro Core, DeLi and a few others.

I have tried both tiny and micro core, but not the others.
The main problem has been support for the hardware.
I'll happily give the others a go though.

Yeah. It's worth noting however that on that sort of hardware it's going to be pretty much impossible to get 10 second boot times using modern software. Just be generous.

All in all I am pretty satisfied with what I have got so far. Just wondered if there are any tricks I may have missed. Anyway, added all conceivable cheat codes today and improved it considerably. Thanks for the replies :)
