Improving wireless coverage.

Afternoon everyone,

I'm just in the process of getting Wifi set up in the new house. The house came with a Virgin Media connection and a D-Link DI-504 router. With that router I couldn't get signal in my bedroom (ground floor at the back, the router's in the living room at the front, its a long house) so when the router packed up I figured getting the Belkin N1 router would do the trick. I can now connect to wireless in my room but the signal's weak (never going above 1 bar and the connection drops more frequently than I'd like).

I'm just wondering what the best option is for me to get things working in my room. I'm not concerned about speed really (so long as it allows me full use of the 10Meg connection), just that it's reliable and doesn't drop out (yes, I know, wired connection would be ideal here but its not feasable to run a cable through the house). I've positioned the router as best I can in the living room (on top of some shelves).

I've got a Netgear DG834PN and Linksys WAG54G lying about so if there's any scope for using those as wireless clients or repeaters then that could be a good option. I'm thinking the wireless repeater idea may work quite well, as when I use my laptop in the kitchen (the ground floor goes Living room -> Flatmate's Bedroom -> Kitchen -> My bedroom) it's up to 3 bars.

Alternatively, I'm just wondering if I'll really see suitable performance benefits getting the Belkin N1 USB wireless adapter over the wireless adapter in my notebook? Another consideration is I have 2 systems in my room and would rather not have to pay for 2 USB adapters, are there any Wireless->Ethernet adapters I could use and plug into the DG834PN and share the connction out to the systems in my room via ethernet?

My budget isn't huge but getting this working is a reasonably big deal so if the equipment would be sueful to have round in the future I'd be willing to invest.

Any help on this would be great.

Regards,
Matt

I'm in the same position really, I'm also looking to improve coverage.
Have you considered getting an additional high gain antenna? From what I've read they seem to have mixed results but you can get a 10dBi for around £20 so it might be worth having a go?

I've also had coverage problems. I bought one of those high-gain aerials from the Bay and it did absolutely nothing.

Today I got a BT Business Hub 2700HGV. They need a bit of hacking to work with non-BT ISPs (firmware flashing), but they're famed for signal strength. I just got it working - now half my road can get my wireless network! I just walked up the street with my laptop and got a good 100m from my house before it started to die. And it was only £5.
