Improving Wireless Range

I have a friend who has recently got a Netgear DG834GT router. She lives in a victorian house, which as you can imagine has really thick walls so the signal does drops off and she has dead spots.

I've suggested investing in a more powerful antenna, but I don't think this will quite cut it. What else can she use to improve her signal?

If I was to change tha aerial, what do you recommend to replace it?

You could run a cable to another Acess Point or Wireless Bridge in the dead spot? I think AP's are pretty cheap nowadays...

Ok I've had another look at this problem, i think the antenna change might be the way to go for now...what do you recommend?
 
If you have 2 antennea then swap one for a directional antenna. This points a string signal in a far narrowed field. Which will penetrate far better.

Theres a few reviews on these on the net. Basically it uses the electrical cables in the house as its antena, thus giving more range.

Quality invention tbh.

I use the devolo kit myself for connecting my media centre to my network so I can stream music and video....I agree with you there, quality invention :D However i need a cheap solution to this problem! :(

The DG834GT only has one antenna, will any of these work?
 
You can get a range extender which bounces the signal. It just sits half way between the 2 items and relays the signal. Not that cheap and cant find one on ocuk but certain auction sites sell them. Linksys make one which seems ok

Cheers for that buddy :) I'll keep it in mind as a second option, I'd still like to try an antenna upgrade first though.....Are any of those antennas ocuk sell suitable?

I think your GT should be the same connector as my G so I'd say look for a 7-9dB Gain aerial Reverse SMA aerial. The bog standard ones fitted are 2, or maybe if you are lucky, 3dB gain aerials and most cheap ones sold are about 2-3dB also.

Excellent thanks for that smids, looking at a set of 9dB Aerials now....might as well buy a set and use one for her DG834GT and use the spare one for my router too :D :cool:
 
This one should be great, directional (point in directional signal boost is needed), and a 10db gain for just £29. Indoor Panel Antenna 2.4GHz-10dB Directional, with adjustable wall-mount, and SMA connector
