oh I do like to be beside the seaside
I'm on Virgin cable using a SH2 and the wireless is pretty naff, part of which is down to where the SH2 is, in a corner of the house surrounded by by loads of electrical stuff.

My idea to improve is to use an access point in the middle of the house, the setup would be

SH2 -> Switch -> PoE injector -> Access point

The access point I'm looking at is a Ubiquiti UniFi UAP-LR.

If I use this setup then would I need the SH2 in its normal mode so it does the router stuff?

Is there a better way to do this?

You will need to leave the SH2 to do the routing.

The UniFi UAP-LR is quite an old model and 2.4GHz only. I suggest that you have a look at the newer versions that support Wireless-AC as they aren't that much more expensive.
