Impulsive decisions...

Hi all,

After 6.5 years of working in the online gambling industry running online chat rooms and winning national awards, helping push profits from £6 million to over £70 million I've seen our department become more and more corporate when we've always a "family company". Main HQ is London and we are based in Stoke so the big bosses don't really know what is going on.

We've have progressively worse managers who are brought in from various fields, don't know the industry and come in acting like the big I am. half my staff have left or are looking to leave, the rest are too new to know what's what.

I told a manager she was wrong about something last May so I was put on a bogus performance plan about things that aren't my job. Thought I would just ride it out but it was dragged out. Anyway, last night I finally had enough and handed my notice in. they've given me 4 weeks pay and I don't have to go in.

Very impulsive but I couldn't keep dealing with the negative atmosphere. I'll be emailing the head guy about it asap, letting him know what is going on there again. But for now, I am jobless, married, mortgage, 3 year old and a new born due at the end of Feb. Job hunting starts now. While I feel good and positive for the first time in ages, it's a scary time. I've enough money to last about 2 months, plus if my 3 cars sell it'll tide me over for another 2.

Wish me luck :D

Anyone else done anything similar? how did it work out?

Wow, having done similar, I can only hope you don't have to endure the stress I did, and I don't have kids or a mortgage.

Good luck man, sometimes these steps are necessary to enjoy your life!

Ok, how does your wife feel about it all?
I'm all for bold statements, but when the well-being/housing/life of dependants is on the line, its seems like a bit of a big leap to leave with nothing to go to!
Best of luck though..

If it were me, I would have stayed on, actively looking for jobs. Even if you were to perform terribly, it would take a long time for them to actually be able to get rid of you, and have bought you at least a few months..

Did something very similar, only I had 3 kids and 4th on the way.
All worked out - never really had a problem finding work (IT/UNIX), and that didn't change.

All the best though mate - too many people become "lifers" at various workplaces as they don't have either the bottle or the self-respect (or ambition I suppose) to move on. Hope everything works out!!

Fair play for pushing yourself into a position that you must climb out of. It takes guts, or stupidity. When/if you get a job will be the deciding factor of which it was.

Having been there for that long, would it not have been easier to put your job searching into overdrive and secure a new position before you handed your notice in, so as you're not out of work?

See if you can make sure your letter gets to the person you want it to and doesn't get filtered by some administrator.

I have his work email and we had issues with our last manager, a quick email to him, a 2 month secret investigation and the manager was gone. Shame they replaced him with 2 more managers who are worse.

Why did you never go for the managers role if all that have come in are rubbish/inexperienced?

They have a "new blood new ideas" approach to management. Very little promotion from within, you have to side step to other departments, then try and progress. I just didn't fancy a job in London, but should have applied for the Canadian job last year :(

It would have, and I've been looking on and off for 6 months but I've been really picky over roles. You just get to a point sometimes when you either have to jump or you're going to pick up a blunt instrument and start hitting people :p They were making some massive changes that were going to make everyone's jobs worse.

It was making me miserable, effecting my home life and making me a bad person. Got an interview lined up for Monday now, I've been offered a little on and off work driving and I still have my photography to fall back on.

If you were unhappy then it was right to leave. But personally I would always advise finding a new job first.

Good luck.

You legend!

I have been feeling in the same boat for a long time here at work buy I'm in a similar position kids mortgage etc so not jumped ship yet, but maybe will do in the coming months.

Good luck!

I'd love to have the balls to hand in my notice without another job lined up! Sadly, I don't know what it is I want to do instead of IT so looking for a new job when you don't know what type of job you want, and don't have any experience in, doesn't seem like a good idea :/

Brave decision, I hope it works out. I empathise totally with the feeling that you can't carry on with a company - I've been there after an acquisition and I did something similar to you.

I'm on the verge of something similar under similar circumstances (I actually walked out yesterday about an hour short of my shift as I was getting to the point of doing something I couldn't take back - I already have hours in hand for this week so they can't do anything other than grumble about it) but it does take a lot of guts to go through with it.

Kind of planning on riding it out and just not caring about the job any more and dealing with it when it inevitably comes to a head, but its not really my nature to not do a proper job if I'm going to do something at all.

Must have been pretty bad for you if you did this.

You say you've been picky over roles before, but now you've sort of shot yourself in the foot and after a few months have passed, the savings are gone and the bills pile up, you really haven't left yourself with much choice - certainly less than when you were employed.

But hey, you could find your dream job tomorrow that you love. Good luck!
