Bill gates and Word/Excel dev Charles Simony together gave $30million in gifts toward the project and we will all have access to it in 2014.

"LSST is truly an Internet telescope, which will put terabytes of data each night into the hands of anyone that wants to explore it. The 8.4-metre LSST telescope and the 3-gigapixel camera are thus a shared resource for all humanity — the ultimate network peripheral device to explore the universe."

Bill Gates -Microsoft co-founder.

It wasn't a 1474MP camera, it was a Canon G10 compact digital - the gigapan head stitched multiple images to create that 1474 :)

It only works on most compact digitals at the mo so until a model is out that works on my Canon 40D I will hold off :p

Panoramic software solutions are able to remove ghosting/movement and align stitched images that look like they were taken in a single shot instead of 30 for example. The Gigapan hardware is way more advanced than any software solution so will get even more accurate results.
