In 2023, do you think VR is worth it? What are you playing?

My first experience with "real" vr was buying a PS Pro and PSVR. That Resident Evil VR game blew me away. I was sold that moment when you wake up as they've taken you hostage at the dinner table, and he thrusts the knife into your face. Right then and there I knew wild experiences could be had. But the market seems to be moving so slowly. I sold the PSPro and PSVR due to lack of games, and forgot about it for a few years. I bought a Quest 2 like 5 months ago to play MSFS2020 with my 3070/9600k, but it ran so poorly it was underwhelming.

I upgraded to a 4080/7600x, and MSFS2020 finally ran well - but it has a bit of a screen door, and worse, it's not much of a game lol. But last Friday I bought a logitech forcefeedback wheel, and I've been having a blast on automobilista 2 and asetto corsa competitiziene. For the first time, I think I'm getting my money's worth on VR. I was worried I was wasting money buying the steering wheel, and I'd never use it, but now I wish I had boughten a real direct drive unit. It's so damn fun, it actually feels like I'm racing a car. Automobilista 2 looks much prettier than MSFS IMO as well. Less ambitious, but shinier, more vibrant, and no damn screendoor.

I just wish there was more stuff. Maybe there is, and I haven't sought it out? I wish Resident Evil 6/7 was on PC vr.

I also wish the quest 2 ran at a higher resolution. As it is, I just leave the Oculus slider on the far right/120hz, and adjust the game's pixel density options to run @ 60 or 120.

This is really a completely unanswerable question. Some folks enjoy playing a variety of computer games, which are better in VR. Some folks enjoy the VR experience and will play a variety of games in VR. Some may be into a specific game or sim which may be playable in VR. Whether is is worth it is subjective, as costs of games and hardware may be prohibitive to some and a minor outlay to others.

I'm still enjoying mine. At a minimum play weekly, currently playing almost daily after having it for two and a half years.

Hoping when I finally get my home office sorted I'll probably finally get around to playing alyx, likely lone echo 1+2, red matters etc.

Bought an Oculus Rift mid-2017 and it completely transformed gaming for me. I’m currently looking into a more modern headset, but the Rift is still brilliant - the immersion blows me away every time I wear it. Such an impressive device.

I'm not in vr as much this year, i've just bought a new motorbike and that's my main interest at the moment. i've used vr since 2014, iirc back then the only AAA game to natively support vr was Elite Dangerous. I do think there's a lack of AAA game support but it's certainly not devoid of good games. For a noob to vr in 2023, there are many good games to try. I was playing daily but the last month i think i picked up a hmd maybe twice. But for sure i will be back playing daily when something makes it kick in for me, like when I buy a new headset (Q3 and/or Crystal), or a new game i like is released. I know if i give old favourite games a break i enjoy playing them again.

You can play the RE remakes and RE 7 and 8 on VR with the Praydog mods which add VR support including motion controls and proper aiming. I'm playing RE7 in VR on my Quest Pro right now and it looks and plays incredibly well. It is a bit janky in places and can get quite nauseous with forced camera moves but you can turn off forced tilting which makes it more comfortable.

Resolution isn't everything. The Quest Pro looks way sharper than the Quest 2 despite on paper having a similar resolution. It even looks sharper than headsets with higher resolution like the G2 or PSVR2. That's due to the lenses and panels and the way the optical stack is arranged.

Personally I prefer DCS to MSFS, you're trading cockpit and aircraft simulation with something to do vs. better scenery in MSFS... but once you've flown some F18 ops on the Super Carrier in VR its hard to go back to anything but VR.

Basically sims in general are far better in a good VR setup, you would need a complete simpit otherwise to even come close.

As for first person games the problem is once you've played a good selection you've played them all, VR adds a completely new take on the genre imho it refreshes the experience. It would have to be a very special first person game for me to even consider a non-VR title now. Resident Evil 7 was brutal in PCVR, Fallout4 is underrated imho as is Into the Radius.

I've spent over 250 hours in Skyrim VR, and probably over 100 hours in No Man's Sky VR, and also Elite Dangerous.

I'm now playing RE7 in VR, and that is looking and performing great. I've got RE Village prepped to play next.

I've also been playing a lot of Ancient Dungeon, natively, as well as Cosmodread (though I also have this on Steam).

I'm looking forward to replaying HL2 Episode 1 in VR when that releases soon.

I play VR and flat, about equally.

For context, I don't enjoy FPS or story games on any platform. Including Alyx.

But you can't beat VR for flight sims, puzzle games, painting, flight sims.

Movies are also great even just on the quest 2. I almost prefer it to a dark room oled.

Best games in VR for me have been VR additions/mods to existing games. Alyx in my opinion was a bit dull/slow compared to Half Life 2 VR mod. Subnautica has been best game I’ve played in VR, plus Skyrim and Fallout 4.
I mainly got my VR setup for driving sims. Assetto Corsa with all the graphics mods is fantastic for example.
I also play 2D games but in console. Nothing in VR has been anywhere close to being as good as Elden Ring IMO. Playing God Of War Ragnarok on my PS5 at the moment.
Have started RE7 PCVR mod which is excellent. Need to finish that.
Also play Walkabout Golf on my Quest 2 with friends. Red Matter 2 and RE4 stand-alone on Quest 2 both excellent.

The VR version of FO4 works great with mods. There's an entire Wabback modlist. The only thing is you have to copy the DLCs from the full game across for some of the mods to work.

Do I think VR is worth it? Yes, a resounding yes. I think VR is amazing and brings a whole new life to gaming. I have found it not only great for gaming but for training as well. I spend as much time as I can in VR, but, at the moment my time is limited so I mainly just get on with the OCUK Social hangout crowd once or twice a week. And that brings me to VR's best feature (IMO) and that is Social gaming. It's like going playing 5 a side soccer with friends. The sense of presence really helps the social aspect of gaming and games like Walkabout Golf never get stale or boring because of that.

The main games I am playing at the moment are Walkabout Golf and Demeo. But I play quick games of Beat Saber, Pistol Whip and Eleven Table Tennis as well. If I find myself with more time I jump into Skyrim Vr or Asgards Wrath. I recently completed Resident Evil 4 as well.

EDIT: That's why I think VR is worth it. It's up to other people to decide if it's worth it for them.
