Well, I was merely minutes away from settling on my new system from OCuk before reading about the price drops and the upcoming P35/Penryn.

When are these new Penryn CPUs out? Are they could to be "back up there" in terms of price like the E6XXX and QXXXX have been for quite some time?

I am concerned about upgradability, and want a good 3 years out of my system. Eagerly waiting your advice as it is all I usually go on!

Intuition tells me is is wise to wait for the price drops, buy my system and then in 3/4 years time then take a look at the next-generation of sockets/fabs?

If you keep the system for 3+ years does it matter too much if the system is at the bleeding edge for a few weeks?
I think its always the "wrong time" to upgrade. There is always something on the horizon. Thats just the way the market is I'm afraid. If your current computer is not up to the task anymore then upgrade and get the best bang for buck you can is my advice.

I agree, bank for the buck. Don't go blowing stupid amounts on the latest tech just for the hell of it. If you have good foundations in place and then you can build on what you have when it doesn't do what you want it to ... or you have some spare cash to blow.

I'm in the same position as you.. I was ready to buy a few months back came onto these forums (quite new here) and saw the thread about 22nd of july, though i'd wait till then for the Q6600 to drop.

My build will be a Q6600, P35 board ... so DDR3 is an option.. good Overclockable RAM, mid level 8800.. Just get whats right for you and the best possible performance for your $.

As for waiting for Penryn if you really need that kind of power, then wait..

Worth waiting for the price drops, only a few weeks to go now. The P35 boards surport the upcoming 45nm platform which are already out now, and some surport ddr3. Playing the waiting game for components is never worth it, there is always something around the corner. You always pay top dosh too.
But price cuts are a different matter.
If me I would wait for the Intel price cuts and see whats around mid July. Thats if you can carry on with your current rig. ;)

Come mid july it will only be a few weeks to wait for the X38 boards :D

Gigabyte GA_P35C_DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard

Seems to be a favourite at the moment, not that I have one. I'm waiting for the price cuts to order my new rig. Probably go the Asus route if they have the Bios sorted by then.
Plus X6850 or Quad
I might even wait for the X38. But thats pushing it, I'm already having restless nights.

trunston - I've always had ASUS myself, and there is a reasonably priced P35 board that they have.

The mobo that you've specified does seem to be very popular, because for the price, P35 DDR2/DDR3 support, quad support... its a bit of a steal!

Yes hi Yesam. Don’t mean to hi-jack the thread.
I’m itching to get my hands on the p5k deluxe. I’ve always stuck with Asus in the past But I can wait until 22nd now, plus see what else is available. I’m just hoping some of the apparent problems are sorted in its Bios by then too. Who knows there might be more news about the up and coming X38s by then too.

Could someone explain to me the new P35 chipset boards? What makes them so expensive if they (currently) only support a socket that is due to be dumped soon?

Well the main reason to buy P35 is to guarantee Wolfdale/Penryn and DDR3 compatibility, its apparantly a better performer in overclocking too. :D

If you wanted to build now, why don't you just get a e2140/e2160, which are much less likely to be affected by the price cuts. Then sell it and upgrade when you have to / want to.

^ That's what I have (E2140) and I put it straight to 2.8GHz stock volts (350 FSB) and the temperature at idle is 40 degrees load which isn't too bad I think considering it's got the stock cooler.

I was also about to build a few months back but decided to hold off as it wasn't urgent.
However I did make the mistake of buying some ram when I thought the price would start to rise (2gig OCZ PC2 6400 Platinum), is it worth keeping or should I sell it and get something better?

Sell it in members market. Drop me a mail when you do, I'm looking for some of that for the right price :D
