In a pickle (advice needed!)

Basically I’m at a loss as to what to do, I’ll explain the situation, I’m currently in my 3rd year at Uni and almost finished, so I could walk away with my degree after summer, but I don’t know if it is worth staying on for 4th year and doing my honours.

I have my heart set on the M.O.D Police and hopefully if all things go to plan I won’t even need my degree. Some of my family and friends think I should stay for my 4th year while others think I should just leave it with my degree, I can see where they are both coming from, staying on for 4th year is just another years debt for a degree I might not even need, while on the other hand if it all goes pear shaped I’ve got an honours degree to fall back on.

Should also mention that I am 24, was a late starter at Uni and if I do stay on for honours I will almost be 26!

Anyone been in a similar situation? Or has some sensible advice to give, would be much appreciated.

Unless an Honours degree would be a lot of help to you in what you want to do (and it doesn't sound like it would to be honest), I'd say you're better off leaving with your normal degree and getting some work experience in what you want to do. Qualifications are all well and good, but if you know what line of work you want to get into, experience is usually far more important.

I know that the MOD plods probably won't bother if you're Hons or not but think beyond that. There may be a time when you don't want to be one and then the Hons might just give you an edge?

Just a thought, whatever, good luck!

I'm the same age as you and in my last year. I contenplated doing an MSc, but I've just had enough of education and all the fannying about. If you don't need honours to get into your chosen career path and you are sure that's what you want to do, then I'd go for it.

Indeed the man speaketh the truth

I was offered to do a paid phd, but like you I was 24 in my final year. I couldn't bring myself to still be at university at 27/28. I'd say don't bother with the honours, another year racking up more debt etc.

Mainly for the opportunities, they have a very large dog handling unit which is what I have always wanted to do. The regular forces up here, i.e. Strathclyde, Borders and Central are very small in comparison and very rarely have any space. Also means that I don’t have to deal with Joe public most of the time, patrolling streets and arresting drunks who are likely to puke on me doesn’t really appeal. It is also very easy to transfer to anywhere in the country as it is a nation wide force and not restricted by areas like the rest of the force.

i would finish the degree. 26 is still young and you will have it under your belt for the future. im 36, started college in glasgow when i was 31 and finished an HND in digital media, moved to canada and ended up working in construction with no previous experience. relax. theres no rush.

I’m still pretty much undecided on what to do, think I will try and arrange a meeting with my head lecturer and see what he has to say, don’t suppose anyone in these forums is in the M.O.D police? Would be good to chat to someone that has served or still serves in it.

Anyways cheers for the input.
