In desperate need of a decent router

Can anyone recommend me a good solid router?

Since first setting up my home network a good few years back I have had nothing but trouble with them,

Surely every router can't be a pile of crap.

I was first recommended the linksys wrt54gl, But this was crap, it rebooted itself at least once per hour, not fun when you are trying to play online games,

Then I bought a dlink di-624 because this was also recommended, this dropped the connection all the time, about every 10 mins or so, that also went in the bin

I now have the netgear WGR614 and although this doesn't reboot or anything it locks up when it has too many connections active, so any games that ping multiple servers at once (TF2 and CSS master server lists do this) or and games that use peer to peer to update are unusable, also when trying to find games online it takes forever and then fails quite often, But this doesn't happen when connected to the modem directly

I have connected 2 desktops through ethernet that run 24 hours, 1 laptop that is on wifi a few hours a day, 2 iphones that are always on when in the house, a PS3 on wifi that occasionally uses online and a 360 that is connected through ethernet quite a lot.

I am looking to spend no more than £150 ideally and the lower the better really,

Surely someone can find me a router that works,

Thanks for taking the time to read my wall of text

I have a D-Link DIR-655 - incredibly reliable, have been running it for over 2 years without any downtime or glitches. Handles hundreds of connections reliably and doesn't lock up when loading the master server list for TF2. Also copes well with 10 wi-fi devices at the same time, no random dropouts. It has all gigabit ethernet ports, and they come quite close to saturation (100MB/sec).

Only downside is that it doesn't support 2.4/5Ghz dual-band, but that's not an issue unless you have plenty of 802.11n devices or have a lot of interference in your house. I can highly recommend this as the best consumer router I've ever used.

Thanks for your reply, from reading a few reviews this does sound like a decent router, can anyone else vouch for it?

I am using a dir-655 (A2 revision), it's an ok router if you dont use mixed wifi standards, if you stick to all N or all G clients its fine. If you do use mixed clients avoid like the plague as you will most likely experience wireless drop outs.

Yeah, but isn't that true of pretty much every router? I have to keep a spare netgear configured for 802.11b and WEP encryption for whenever my brother needs to go online with his PSP. That way, I don't compromise on speed or security of the main network, and I don't need to fiddle with settings - just plug it in when needed, power off when finished.

Also, to add, I have the A3 revision.

If you were having that many issues with a WRT54GL you were either doing something badly wrong or it was broken and should have been replaced under warranty.

I wouldn't mind wireless dropouts as long as the ethernet stays steady, all the important devices are connected through ethernet, it's only phones and a laptop that is used for web browsing that are wireless and they are all G

I phoned linksys and they said that it was a firmware issue, so I updated that and the problem stayed, when I got in touch with them again they refused to acknowledge that it was a fault as I could browse the web most of the time,

I think it was a problem with multiple connections, on our network we can be connected to anything up to 300 peers at a time, most routers sulk at this and just reboot as soon as they can't cope with any more

Of course it did the, time-out for a connection in linksys firmware is 5 days.

Install Tomato http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato , then go to advance*, conntrack and adjust the values to.

3000

Then 300 peers wont crap-out.

*Clear the nvram twice first.
