So I'm in need of a new ISP and I live in a rather small town in the Highlands of Scotland. The max speed I can get is 8mb and it seems my choices are limited as I'm restricted to a non-LLU service.

I was looking at ADSL24+ but they want to charge me a setup fee of £50! Sky also want to charge £30. I don't really know where else to look. It would be nice if I could get away without having to pay a setup fee but it doesn't look like that'll be happening.

If you haven't got an ADSL service, the only way you'll avoid paying the activation fee is if you tie in for a contract term.

Otherwise, there's no reason ADSL24 or Sky should want that amount...

I was looking at Pipex and they don't seem to want to charge me a fee. They are a bit more expensive at almost £25 a month though. I guess if I was forced to pay the setup fee it'd all even out at the same amount at the end of the year anyway.

Is this what you need for my exchange details?

We have ADSL and ADSL Max available.

Anyone got any more suggestions for me? I'm going to order tomorrow as not having the internet at my house is killing me. I'm thinking of just going with Pipex, else I'll maybe just pay the setup fee and go with Sky or something.

Work out what a year is going to cost including the setup fee, then see which is the best value for money for the speed you will likely get.

If you have Sky Tv you might get them to do a deal on the package if you push hard enough.

At my mates now and about to order from either O2 or Pipex.

Can anyone vouch for the O2 Access package? If it's not great I'll settle with Pipex.

I can't vouch for the O2 package but if you are an O2 mobile customer you get things cheaper.

cant go wrong with o2/be, and sky were great at my old house too (and im a bit OTT when it comes to downloading/uploading 24/7) i was with pipex years ago (before sky) and I got 2 letters about usage from them, as well as the speed being erratic/disconnections happening.. however I must say that was after some "takeover" or something happened with pipex i forget wat happened, before then it was a decentish service, but there were definately better alternatives
