In F1 what happens when someone runs out of tyres?

What happens in a race when a competitor runs out of tyres?

Maybe they have too many spins or punctures in practice. Maybe the tyre degradation is too high. Maybe the whole weekend required full wets and their allocation isn't sufficient thanks to punctures / whatever. Whatever the reason, in the race the competitor needs a new set of tyres to safely continue and none are immediately available. What happens?

An unlucky team could easily go through six sets - or more - just in the practise sessions thanks to punctures. Drive over debris from a crash and hey presto you have a puncture.

Wets... they tend to last pretty well. But they do minimal running on the inters and wets anyway incase they need to use them during the race.
