EA is going to allow ingame adverts....

Personally I dont agree with it... Where could u place an advert in Oblivion? Would a double glazing salesman come round to your house in Anvil? Perhaps you could find 10% Shield 10% Speed increase Nike's in a dungeon somewhere!?

It might look ok on a driving game...

Anyway, I dont agree with it...

Tbh they would never put ads in oblivion in the first place. Ads in games have already been around for a while, for example Need for Speed, the amount of best buy ads in that game.

I dont have a problem with it tbh.

Last I checked, EA don't produce Oblivion. As for the topic at hand though, Anarchy Online has been ad-supported for a long time to make it free, but I don't remember even seeing an ad in it, and Tomb Raider: Legend is also heavily laiden with advertising.

For me it would depend on the ad, the size of it, and the game it's in. Ads in Battlefield 2142 would be fine, for example, but in a game like Oblivion then no way.

Sometimes tho like with BR2142 it can add to the atnosphere because it makes the game feel a bit more realistic.

Depends what game it's in as you say. When i see Burger King adverts in NFSU it gives it a lot more atmosphere, i enjoy seeing stuff like that. But as you say, if they were to start putting it in games, for example Oblivion, it would ruin the game, i hope it doesn't come down to this.

Don't see how you've got advertising in Oblivion mixed into this.

Personally, I don't think it's too bad an idea, as long as it's done subtly and reasonably tastefully, so styles of adverts etc follow on with the style of game, so billboards / posters in real-world games, stuff on TVs etc and maybe even soundbites in the background for ambience. Games have already had advertisements in them for quite some time.

If adverts start affecting gameplay, delaying your time into games etc, then it will become an issue, but I'm sure the game maker will have the final say in their product, well, mostly, so that their game doesn't get spoiled by advertisement space in it.

*bang!*
"That frag was sponsored by Kelloggs Frosties"
*'They're gunna taste great' plays in background*
*Uninstalls game*

You beat me to it Freeman.

Yeah, its a slippery slope... I know EA didnt make Oblivion.. (thank god)
Because we would be playing Daggerfall 4 instead.... ;)

Roduga... :p

No problem with it as long as its not obviouse. If there's a bill board in the game why not have real advertisement instead of false. Or real logos on the side of a car ect.

Well said. So long as it stays in modern or futuristic games, and so long as it's subtle and fitting for the scene, I couldn't care less.

It's when I see a Heineken advert in an Oblivion inn that I would be mad, but I doubt that will ever happen.

Only games they should ever be in are racing games with city environments like NFS etc where they actaully fit in.

He was giving an example of how it would completely mess up a game like Oblivion if advertising was put in.

True, but the way the article is written suggests the majority of the initial ads would be in sports / modern style games. I'd hope a developer wouldn't be stupid enough to but adverts for coca-cola and viagra in a medieval / dungeon style game like Oblivion... but it is EA, so we'll have to wait and see ;)

Thinking about it, it would be funny...

Norwich Union Life insurance, BUPA health care in FEAR combat...

IKEA furniture etc, SONY tv's in Sims3. In fact they could throw so much advertising in Sims3 that they could give it away free....

AO was indeed doing this ages ago. I remember E4 advertising Lost with videoclips on some of the billboards in the cities. Was it only for thr free accounts though or did everyone get it?... can't remember now. Anyway given the right type of game and where it's placed it's not that bad really.

Or most fps, most have city maps and most cities have bill boards.
All sports games, logos on sportswear ect.

Apart from medivel games there's not many where I cant see advertising as a problem.

But in an FPS I couldn't be doing with seeing a "Sure for men" advert on the wall in say cs_office or even any other FPS game, I could deal with it flying past at high speed in racing games where it isn't really noticed as there isn't chance to pay great attention to it.

they wanted to do this with planetside (i think) and also Anarchy Online, to replace the subs etc.
