Is anyone else not liking this growing trend of giving in game extras if you purchase a game from a specific retailer?

It seems to be getting quite common and quite a few games recently have given free in game items, extra missions, extra weapons, extra maps.

I think its fine when they give away extras outside of the game but I just think I should get the same actual game wherever I purchase it.

Haven't seen that much of it fortunately.

I think it probably makes sense from the publisher/developers point of view, they probably get paid a juicy sum from the retailer concerned to create something unique for them, which probably takes very little time and effort (given that all the tools etc will already be in place).

Hmm, I was gonna list examples but didn't bother and now I cant think of a couple of good ones, but here are some that spring to mind.

FarCry2 - 4 extra missions
Age of Conan - In game mount
Warhammer - in game items, a couple of rings and some other thing
Gears of War 2 - some gold plated rifle (not a PC game I realise)
Red Alert 3 - exclusive in game item for Warhammer (rather odd)

FarCry 2 was one, Fallout 3 (though that is the limited edition items not data) another. A few others also. I can't really see it as a problem though- all the FarCry 2 codes for example have been passed around internet forums.

One thing I have noticed is that one shop always seems to have an exclusive Collectors Edition version of some of the big games - I have to admit it has tempted me sometimes, though the best bet is to wait a few months and you can get the CE version for peanuts (under £20 usually)...
