In gaming, everything is amazing, but no one is happy

We live in what may be the golden age of video games. There has never been a greater selection of games to play, there have never been more ways to buy the games we play, and prices for the games we play have declined. Classic and rare games are finding a second home, and a second chance, on digital distribution services on both the PC and consoles. Everything, on the whole, is getting better.

Or

The flipside is, well, it could always be better. If people didn’t strive for better then we wouldn’t have all that amazing stuff in the first place. And the first step in striving for better is often the complaint. “This isn’t good enough. Something has to change.” And that is why gamers complain: they are smart, imaginative people, who can quite easily imagine how things could be better. Whether those imaginings are right (or even feasible) is another matter, but no one should say that they are unacceptable.

That is possibly the stupidest article I have ever read.

What exactly is it trying to accomplish?

Just because we have something good or a lot of something, doesn't mean we can't be critical of it and in doing so urge for it to get better.

The reason i posted it was because I've read so many times members here saying with certain games " Some of you are never happy "

Congratulations you have observed a fundamental part of human nature.

Seriously though I don't mean you any offense Neil, however that article probably isn't the best example, it's waffle and idealistic nonsense.

how right he is, i remember the days of tape loading and one game would take like 5 mins to load with a 30% success rate, now if its longer than 30 secs 'hump whats with this' and if it does load 'im taking this crap back' o_O

Heh, they were just the C90 tapes you got off your mate at school:)

Most were a simple solve of volume control... man those days had value, a badge of honour making copies over tape to tape din leads:)

Yes, a volume control that you had to move a minute fraction, then wait 5mins on it not loading, rinse and repeat 20 times...

It was a fun era ;)

I found this article a shame because the fundamental point (pretty much what was quoted in the OP) is valid and something I have been evangelising about in recent times; however it gets a bit too bogged down in bashing the critics rather than focussing on the core issue.

Reasons why modern PC gaming is great:

+Gaming is cheap compared to historical prices
+Massive backcatalogue of games you can play, often at knockdown prices
+Digital distribution makes it easier to acquire games (especially older titles)
+Massive online support network in terms of websites, youtube, forums etc etc
+Hardware is more powerful
+Internet connections are better

In terms of people harping back to the 'good old days', as it turns out many of the games from that era could still be played today should you so wish, at higher settings/performance than before.

Essentially by being a modern PC gamer, you can have your cake and eat it, playing both old and new games.

I'm happy when I play Alpha Centauri, Baldurs Gate, Sacred 2 or Guild Wars.

Mostly everything else is poop compared to those. Until theres more games that are just as good I wont be happy.

Everything in gaming is amazing, especially the complete lack of top quality strategy and role playing games.
