hi guys, im currently on an opty 170 OC'd to 2.7ghz, 2GB RAM, asrock dual-sata mobo, 8800GTX. tbh its serving my needs but im noticing im not getting the best out of my games with this setup, i know the 8800gtx can perform better.

When i shutdown the computer, just as its about to turn off i hear a loud squeal and it restarts automatically. the squealing remains and i get a black/blank screen. Not sure if its the GFX card (the GTX doesnt squeal at all or under stress in games; its silent); hence i think the mobo is on its way out.

Anyway having been a AMD boy for donkeys years, i think i might as well upgrade and go to intel. I definitely need a CPU and heatsink, RAM and Mobo. Im also contemplating a new case too, but thats not urgent. as for budget, im not sure (but it needs to be as cheap as possible).

Im looking at a q6600 (not sure OEM or retail, anyone?). My main uses will be windows, games and media playback, hd-dvd,blu-ray etc. i think i might as well go quad as opposed to dual as im not playing games all the time, hence it not being a purely games machine.

for RAM im looking at the 2x2gb OCZ PC6400 deal @ £37 at the moment...in a certain way its this deal that is prompting me to upgrade. that seems dirt cheap.

As for mobo, i have no idea..i need something that will overclock well, like get the q6600 to 3.6Ghz easily, and maybe a little further, but i want to use decent(ish) cheap RAM like that above, which should get me to 3.6Ghz no probs. Also need lots of SATA ports, PCI for my X-fi and esata if possible (this is not necessary as i have a esata pci-e card anyway, so if it saves £££'s then i dont need it onboard).

So basically i want something decent with the above requirements; £250-£300 max but the cheaper the better, if i can go lower i would love it.

Now i would love a new case; i got a cheap 20 pound jobby that has served me amazingly well over the years, but case temps are a little too high for me; its also really cramped with cables and hdds clogging it all up. I think i should go for a full tower case, but i need something that is bigger than my current midi case. I do love the look of the coolermaster cosmos rc-1000, but the prices have shot up by the looks of it. oh i would like esata on the case if possible. what cases do you peeps recommend? Something that remains cool with decent space would be perfect.

TIA guys!

With OEM, i think you just get the CPU as opposed to retail you get CPU, termal paste + heatsink/fan. I have no idea why the OEM is slighty more expensive though =/.

the rams good.
motherboard, Asus p5k has plenty of overclocking features

or slighty cheaper, a gigabyte board
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-125-GI

so altogether it comes to £249.65 (if you go with the gigabyte board instead)

that leaves you with £0.35 for a case which puts the sonata out the window :p.

thanks for those suggestions, which intel chipset is the one to go for? i need one that will get the q6600 to a decent speed as stated above..what are the differences between intel p35/p43/p45? BTW i have a corsair hx520 PSU already. didnt realise cpu coolers were so expensive these days!

guys im thinking of getting 8gb RAM now that its so cheap...if i were to get 8gb would it affect the overclock of the q6600? Still want a cosmos too :)
