Here is the history of my problem:

I had ADSL MAX for 6 week with Aceinternet, from 8th May 2006 until 5th July 2006. I was using a USB modem (Zyxel Prestige 630), and during the first 10 days I rebooted my computer as and when needed. Right from the start with Aceinternet, I got a sync speed of 3.2Mbps, and during the 6 weeks I was with them the Sync Speed was always between 2.8-3.2Mbps, my download speed was generally around 1900-1950Kbps and was always stable, which I was happy with, the BT Wholesale Availability Checker, indicates that my phone line can return speeds of 1.5Mbps or greater.

Unfortunately due to a certain issue, with which I was not happy with, introduced after I had signed up with them, was the cause of me migrating to Fusion Media Networks, the ADSL MAX servicewith Fusion was activated on 5th July 2006, right from the word go, my download speed was not stable, ie one minute it was 1400Kbps, then after a few minutes it was 2400Kbps, this was particularly evident when downloading a large (100MB) file. On 6th July 2006, I contacted Fusion Support and asked them why I was experiencing these great fluctations, with the result that they “reset” my line in some way (I think the correct terminology for what they did was that they “checked the target SNR margin was set to the default and if it wasn’t they reset it to 6db). Over the 7th, 8th & 9th July, I was still getting high download speeds, but still had the great fluctuations in it. During this period, ie from 6th July to 9th July, my computer was not rebooted, so the modem was not turned off or disturbed, but on Sunday, 9th July 2006, I had to reboot my computer a number of time. After this my download speed dropped quite considerably.

I rang Fusion Support on Monday, 10th July because of the drop in my download speed, and it was suggested by them that the reason my download speed dropped was because I had reset my modem, by rebooting, thus interfering with the “training” of the line, so because of this I spent over £100, and bought a router, which is powered independently from the computer, which would allow me to reboot Windows XP without interfering with the modem hardware device.

I took delivery of the new router on Tuesday 11th July, and had it set up by late afternoon, however, even with the new router, the download speed was low. On the morning of Wednesday, 12th July 2006, my download speed was only 472Kbps, it was then that I asked Fusion Support to reset the line again (ie, check the target SNR margin was set to the default and if it wasn’t to reset it to 6db) so that it could “retrain” again so as to achieve a better “profile”. It was just after 12 noon, that they emailed me and informed me that my line had been reset, so that a new training period could start. They suggested I leave the router to run without touching it, until Monday 17th July, which I did.

During this period of time my sync speed was 2144Kbps, my download speed started off at 460Kbps, and then rose to 913Kbps around 6pm on Thursday 13th July, it stayed around that spped, the final download speed test I sent them was 937Kbps, during this time, ie from 12th July to 17th July, I sent them a total of 19 download speed tests.

I am also over £100 out of pocket due to buying a new router, my 6 week period with Aceinternet demonstrated that my USB modem (Zyxel Prestige 630) was more than adequate to give acceptable stable download speeds, and that the rebooting of my computer, with the Zyxel modem attached, was not the reason for my low unstable download speed with Fusion.

On Monday 17th July I got in contact with Fusion Support again, and they then suggested I leave my router powered on, and disconnect the phone cable that runs from the router to the phone socket, from the wall socket for between 30-40 mins, and then reconnect it, this I did, and then see what happens over the next 3-5 day period. After reconnecting the phone cable into the wall socket, the the sync speed was still at 2144Kbps, and my download speed was still around 930Kbps.

However, by 5pm on Monday 17th, the download speed had increased to around 1350-1390Kbps, the sync speed didn’t change.

Today, Wednesday, my download speed is still around 1350Kbps and is stable, sync speed still 2144Kbps.

My questions are as follows:

1) Why am I experiencing a lower download speed with Fusion than what I had with Aceinternet?

2) How can I increase my download speed to the 1900Kbps that I experienced before?

Many thanks for your suggestions. :)

EDIT:

According to my router the ADSL Statistics for Downstream are:

SNR margin (db): 12.5

Attenuation (db): 57.0

OK, the first thing is to get your line attenuation (as you have a router you should be able to get this, probably on a "status" page of some description). This should give you an idea of the maximum sync rate of the line.
I would expect that as they are both using ADSLmax and not LLU equipment that your sync rate should be the same.

The standard line SNR used nowadays is around 10dB, to allow for a better stability. 6dB may result in your line being unstable (SNR can fluctuate), and cause disconnections.

The fact that your Sync was changing over time suggests that you were disconnecting/reconnnecting, as your sync rate is set at connection, and doesn't change (with ADSLmax, ADSL2+ has support for Seamless Rate Adaption).

The actual download rate you get is set by a whole load of things, like the server you are downloading from, how many people are on your exchange etc. It could be however that you have been put on an incorrect "profile", which is how they can independently set your download rate from your sync rate.

What sort of router did you get? £100 is quite expensive for a router (my recently purchased ADSL2+ compliant router cost me £80, and it's sitting at 18Mb/s at the moment)

Thanks for the reply, ADSL statistics are as follows:

Downstream:

SNR margin (db): 11.8
Attenuation (db): 57.0

My router is the US Robotics 9108, This one. The modem I was using was the Zyxel Prestige 630-C1

The router cost £83, but after adding networking cable and postage, total cost was over £100.

When using either the modem or router, my download speeds have been consistently low, during all times of the day, and not just at one or two specific periods.

Both ISPs are/were using as you say ADSLMAX and not LLU.

My download speed since yesterday morning, after having disconnected the (router) phone cable from the wall socket (in an attempt to increase it) for 35mins is 460Kbps, Line Rate - (downstream, ie sync speed) is not 2240Kbps. :)

Well, I now have a download speed of around 1900Kbps (sync 2.7-2.8Mbps), which I am happy with.

All I did was simply download continously, and that is what seems to have sorted it, I restarted the router every 1-2 days. I have been with this ISP for 30 days now, so it appears that the profile ((DSLAM) or whatever it is called) of the line, is not just changed/set within the first 3 or even 10 days, but continues certainly up to 30 days and probably indefinitely.

Anyway, for those of you who feel you are not getting the best download speed from your ADSL Max service, try simply downloading continously (day and night), and only occassionally retart router/modem (and be patient). :)
