Hi All,

I'm in need of some advice and please no flaming as ive never been in this situation

I own a Vauxhall Corsa Sxi 1.2 2003 (Bought in 2006)/// 63,233 on the clock

Finished paying for it over 2 half years ago.

A year and half ago on the way to another town 22miles the journey was fine getting there but on the way back I my temperature gage was red so pulled over and called AA out etc. My water pump was damaged and needed to be replaced which I did. A week later I had a service/mot done via Vauxhall and passed with flying colours. & Nothing found what so ever, So guessing that its had a chain reaction.

However this Monday I had my yearly Service/Mot and tones was found. (Again Vauxhall)

New Drive Shaft among other things. Worst was my Head Gasket & Timing Chain are screwed.

To fix this will cost me £780 for Head Gasket & Timing Chain.

I'm in a dilemma do I scrap the car as im guessing the total cost value wouldn't be worth putting in to

Or do I pay £780 and pray it lasts me another 10+ years.

How do you know the chain is gone?

If you plan to keep the car for a few year, spend the cash, if not, trade it in?

The timing chain should last forever if serviced regularly and on time, so shouldn't need done again if you do have it changed.

the car usually sounds like a diesel when they need changing.

I didn't plan on getting rid of the car till it blows up n run it to the ground.

Chain is making a racket. And was again told it would cost me more to get the chain done separate and whilst the engine would be dropped to fix the head gasket would be best to do both at the same time.

Why would they need to 'drop' the engine?

Take the engine out to fix it? No clue what's involved to do the work tbh & quite cramped in a corsa engine

They are taking the proverbial mate, everything you have mentioned would be done with the engine in situ...

okay cheers for that, i shall look at another garage then.

Still no idea how much this would all cost inc vat+labour etc

You've owned the car since it was 3 years old, you've had it for 6 years. Surely as you have no intention or desire to change car it would be wise to spend the money and get it fixed. You know that it's good to go. Scrapping it and buying something else (unless you buy new or nearly new - which given the situation makes no sense) will not guarantee that the next car won't have lots of issues and things going wrong.

I have no desire to get another car when this one works and has been good to me since now. But if it gets to the point where finance is an issue vs car cost probs worth about 2.5k by now or less. Then another car time i guess.

So i shall keep looking for garages that wont rip me off then lol

z12xe cylinder head - ~£250/300 (unless you get yours reconditioned)
headgasket set - £30 - £40
timing chain kit - £50 - £60

both jobs coincide, so I guess the labour can depend, although it's advisable to get both done together as you'll be killing two birds with one stone.

I would consider saving the 780 towards a new car, sell yours to someone who will fix it, you could probably get 500 for it, and then add a bit to it and buy something that will last you another 5 years.

Say around 3k that gives you plenty of options.

would take me 3 years to save 3k :P id have to get a loan

is the car in good condition apart from the issues above ?

get it fixed but get more opinions and quotes

a broken car is worth nothing to you whereas it being fixed is a car you know and could then trust

Stripped out and replaced excessively worn n/s fl suspension ball joint
Stripped out and replaced o/ outer track rod end
Stripped out and replaced n/s drive shaft assembly

Ill list the items from Vauxhall that i have flagged on paper.(Some fixed)

Amber osr break pipe starting to corrode

Amber center exhaust corroded and leaking

Red Excessive Play in os track rod end
Red Excessive play in n s lower ball join

Amber both inner driveshaft boots split

doing better than this guy did atleast...http://www.allcorsa.co.uk/forums/showthread.php/52-plate-corsa-44271.html but get more quotes , a head skim and gaskets belts chains really shouldnt be that much on a 1.2 corsa IMO . pay attention to last post on there

I guess it pays to look around then, but id have no idea what to look for if buying parts online nor would i trust them. Just looking on the webiste displayed on the last post of the link and it can't find any items that i need or give me a price.

780+500 if you sell your car is 1280 so a small loan or 0% money transfer credit card for the extra 1720 and your at your 3k.

However if you like your car and are happy to pay the repairs I would be suprised if you couldn't find somewhere to do all the work for less than £800, rather then 780 for just the head and chain!
