Going to buy a US 40gb and understood they all supported 100v-240v and i would just need a uk kettle lead. Just been into toys r us and there's a big sign saying they aren't compatible with 220v-240v. They telling fibs to deter people buying or have sony made a change?

Quick response would be great!

All the power supplies in all ps3 models are universal. The box on the USA one may say 110V but it will have the same power supply on the inside which will auto switch when you plug it into a UK electricity Outlet with the appropriate UK Kettle Lead, it will "switch". (Even if it didn't you would just get a step up convertor from an electrical store like you would for other types of foreign electrical goods).

Maybe telling porkies as all the previous PS3 used a PSU that detected and changed to the correct Voltage. But im not 100% sure, an 80Gb would be a safer bet as im sure they do work.

Ok thanks good to hear. I looked all over the box buy couldn't see any voltage ratings. It was a actual sign toys r us had made rather than an official sony one

No people have imported 40gb from USA (some import sites even shop them here) they work fine.

The power supplies inside are 110-240v I know someone in the US who took one apart to see what it was like inside and he confirmed it for me.

Seems a lot hassle buying one in NY. No warranty for starters and the thing is HEAVY. It's going to add a lot to your allowed luggage weight.

I brought one back from Boston 2 weeks ago, they are universal, not too heavy, just take out of box and shove in a bag. I was also lucky not to get stung by customs, but I was there for a long period, so be prepared to pay customs if they ask, and you can't talk fast, though since they have no way of telling if you got it here or there you shouldn't worry too much.

Also I payed £270 after conversion and bank surcharge for PS3 40GB spiderma 3 BR, Ninja gaiden and drakes fortune.
