With the summer months, my machine is running a little warm, and so I'm got an extra fan that I'm going to put on the side of the box (after drilling a few holes of course)... but I'm not sure if it should be at the top (near the CPU) or bottom (large spare volume), and if it should be pushing air in or extracting air.

There is currently a fan extracting at the back of the box, and a fan near the bottom circulating air near the HD's and video card.

Any input would be appreciated.

Extract at the top imo. Hot air rises afterall. Maybe could affect the CPU fan if it is "stealing" air pressure from it?

In / Out does not really matter, airflow is what you need, as d_brennen stated Hot air rises so try to go with it.

Move the PC to a room that isn't being warmed all day by the sun. I have an West facing room which is actually cooler in the summer months than the winter when the heating isn't on.

cheers for the responses guys... I'm going to stick it at the top, and test it out blowing in and then out to see if there's any difference.

Admiral Huddy... afraid I don't have the luxury of moving to another room, but I see where you're coming from... it's located in a space that's fairly enclosed... maybe I'll try to do something about that too :)

yes if there is limited airflow round the case this will also raise temps higher, make sure any exhaust fans are blowing the hot air out and not just recycleing round the case, there should also be plenty of space round the case

i've added fans to the shelf my 360 sits on powered by an old 5v mains adapter
