Photography has been a god-send this year. I was hit by a car whilst cycling november last year, the injuries meant i had to give up my main hobby - Rowing (physical and brain injury unfortunately). I took up photography to fill the void and have enjoyed it thoroughly, a silver lining to what had been a very dark cloud.

I posted a couple from this set in the 'post your pics' thread. However, one of them managed to make its way onto flickr's 'most interesting' page so i am pretty chuffed.

back to the shoot....

Lighting setup was a single brolley box (ebay special) with a cheapo yn460II flash triggered by a yn rf-602, as close i could get it without interfering.

Camera is canon 500d, and the lens is the stunningly good value tamron 17-50mm F2.8 non vc.

PP was minial, a colour adjust for all to tone to my style, some sharpening here and there. Lighting was the key here, probably the first shoot where i can honestly say PP was light touch and took very little time.

PS - I have recently changed my username from Adam W to adamau5 (my flickr name).

I really like them, beautiful model (wife :p) and she looks comfortable in front of the camera.

No. 3 is the best one and if i had to guess, that's the one on the Most Interesting page on Flickr?

Con.

You say the processing was minimal and to your style, but I can see 3 different styles there at least. The skin tones are all over the shop. I am not against different processing but they are not different enough between them to say different processing, and too far apart to be 1 set.

#1 was the most interesting.

The tones i agree are too different to be a set. #1, #2 and #5 took similar curves. #3 and #4 took different curves to suit the image, i should have posted them in a different order.

Luckily for me my wife is an excellent amateur makeup artist so touch ups were also minimal. Matte makeup makes such a difference to te end result - infact i would go as far to say the makeup is as important as the light modifiers.

compliments passed to the wife who grinned as in #5

Lovely portrait in the first one. Second one looks like your focus is slightly out, sharper on the hood fur than on her eyes? third one is a a nice fun image and she is removed from the background well although the dark cardigan is a bit of a distraction. Really like the fourth one. Very engaging eyes and the darker gloves and hood draw you in more. And the fifth one like the third nice fun image although maybe with her hair across one eye not quite as good as the 1st and 4th. Nice set overall though Adam :)

cheers derek. Focus is bang on (technically) in the 2nd, it thinks its contrast in the fur that is perhaps too much, detracting from the eyes - I agree it doesnt sit 100% right; I also didnt sharpen for screen, this wont have helped. 100% crop shows they are actually super sharp.

Maybe i good a good copy, but the tamron has surpassed expectations. Its sharper than my 50mm f1.8 @ f4.

Nice photos :)

Oh and how do you go about getting the focus bang on the eyes? Is it simply a case of making sure the relevant focus point in the viewfinder is lit, or is there a lot more to it?

excellent photos, very nice captures. I agree that they don't really fit as a set since the processing is quite different.

Doesn't detract form the photos though.

largely that and the biggest tip is a zoomed in review. I review my photos on camera frequently whilst shooting to check for focus / sharpness, lighting.

Agree with the above - excellent photos, really very very nice. It's just that the processing is different as a set that distracts for me. But individually they're all great! :) I think #2 is my fave :)

agreed re the set -

I am almost tempted to go back to the raws and pp more as a set... trouble is individually i really like the images as they are. shouldnt take me long though, PP was mostly a quick curves adjustment for tone, and then a levels (you will notice i tend to wash out the blacks slightly... just more pleasing to my eyes).

lovely set of images, no 2 being my favourite, would have liked to see the eyes a little sharper as the main focus seems to be on the hood, really good composition though. I love the processing on the third pic, great work!

Thanks for the comments everyone, much appreciated.

The tamron has to one of the best value for money lenses available. Brand new I paid 254. Couple this with a 500d and the yongnuo flashes and you get a very capable budget system.

Great shots, and most are very sharp, were you shooting at 2.8?

I agree with another poster though with No.2, the eyes are definitely not as sharp as in No.4
If you compare the lashes there is allot more contrast in No.4

At such short DOF it's easy to do though, there could have been a miss-focus (front focus), or you could have have focused on the wrong point, but it was more likely your wife shifted her balance slightly from the point when you focussed, and then released the shutter.

Another response to say an excellent shoot. Very nice on your first outing. Having a nice model to look at help the situation as well.

Was the photos cropped or did you focus and recompose?

Nice collection! Only quibble is the last one as she looks like she has no bottom teeth hehe.

Otherwise, I do like!

Lovely set, I don't mind the mixed processing, but I guess for a coherent portfolio set you'd want to get them the same. Nice work! :)

Now you have been using the Tamron 17-50 Non VC and you are so impressed, would you be tempted to get the VC version of the lens?

Also really nice shots and congrats on the flickr most interesting!
