Hi folks,

My job is a sales rep, opening accounts etc!

Anyway we have a quarterly target, for each product, for savings accounts I have to do 35 every quarter. (Not comission based just a target!)

I have to reach 80% (28 out of 35)of that to get a bonus.

Anyway, quarter is up at the end of the month, and I was on 14, so I did a last ditch attempt, and signed up my family for £1 saving accounts each, my mate and a few customers etc!

Anyway, I managed to get 14, but I did open a couple myself. Bear in mind I already have a few of them already as we all do! Just for numbers etc

My colleague has phoned me to warn me apparantly its been flagged up that 5 accounts have been opened by one person same person or something... for £1 each.

Its worth noting, you CAN open from £1 to £unlimited

Now... I have signed my family up, so its the same surname, so I can just say thats why, but it is different people just same surname, and that so what if its family, as they wanted to open one anyway.

It's not me personally, as I only opened 2 for myself, again, so what, if I want to why shouldnt I? Its my money...

Im on the LOWEST pay in the job, ive been there the LONGEST and the bonus is my only chance of acheiving some extra £££ at least. So what do I say when my boss asks me?

Can I even say its against data protection to look and see how many accounts I have personally, as surely its my own money and my own use, and against DPA to look at mine.

Your going to get disciplined or sacked - you can't hide the facts, which are you have been falselt inflating your sales figures to hit targets.

My advice would be to not say you needed the bonus etc - just say you didn't want to be looked on as a failure and let the pressure to succeed get to you - apologise a lot, you might keep your job.

I'd advise you to get out of any job which gives you sales targets, they will demoralise you and turn you into a snake.

You get a bonus for failing to reach your target? Strange way of working :p

Its naff all really bonus, probably if you hit 100% on BOTH products (Insurance & Savings), im looking at about £300 bonus.

If I hit 80% on each, then probably about £100!

My boss is usually quite approachable, im gonna phone him in a bit, not to mention anything, just see if he mentions it to me.

I just wanted an answer ready, which will be;

"I realised just how far behind I was falling, and there was no way I wanted to end a quarter so low and behind target, so in a desperate plunge I asked my family and friends to sign up, as well as a complete drive with customers to try and get to a rubbish, but more respectable finish of 70% or so (I'll not mention bonus or 80%)

When this happened at my last place of work (ie putting through value added services that weren't sold) the security team were called in and people lost their jobs over it.

We weren't that pushed to get the sales imo it was money motivated where I was.

OK,

Spoke to my boss he said on the phone he needed to sit and chat with me, and then gave me the reason why.

I told him what I said i'd say, and told him to cancel the '2' accounts that were gonna be opened in my name, I said I didnt realise I had 7 in total already (quite believable as the whole team nationally do have a few each)

Hopefully that will be it, as he was laughing and joking with me afterwards about other things, and also about another employee causing issues (not related to mine), saying it was 'doin his head in'.

He said ok, he'll tell his boss and see what he says, he might say he needs to document it, but other than that, im guessing ive just got a slapped wrist over it.

I really want to get out of my job which involves targets, it really does get me down.

But i don't know what else I can do, plus this is an ok job and it pays well, but it stresses me out sometimes. :(

Most jobs will involve targets of some kind. Remember, a little stress is good for you, I couldn't function without it :)
