Hey guys,

Trying to be put this as simple as possible:

Ask for a spec on here, pretty much stayed with it and built my new system:

BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £0.00 1 £224.99
Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-620HXUK) £0.00 1 £74.99
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail £0.00 1 £139.99
Coolermaster Hyper TX 2 CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/LGA775) £0.00 1 £6.99
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

G.Skill 4GB DDR2 PQ PC2-6400C5 (2x2GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit (F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ) £0.00 1 £51.99
Maxtor Diamondmax 22 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (STM3500320AS) £0.00 1 £53.99
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - 1Pk (66I-00715) £0.00 1 £59.99

Samsung SH-S203D 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM £0.00 1 £14.99

So that's all fully built and it worked, setup my dual screen monitors, installed vista on Saturday, kept it on overnight for updates and downloads and then played 7-8 hours of gaming all fine with no problems. Shut it down last night, took ages to shut down as it was installing windows updates and now I simply cant get back on today, cant get any picture what so ever and the HD light isnt flashing so Im guessing its sitting somewhere.

The CPU is overclocked to 3.0ghz, which i did on Saturday, I just did a reset of the CMOS and the first time i rebooted I got back to the motherboard logo screen only for nothing else to actually happen, rebooted and same black screen!

I'm all out of ideas and it's been a stressful day at Uni worrying about coming back to try and resolve this issue, which I'm getting nowhere with :(

Any assistance would be really helpful as I'm completly stuck and lost, the most annoying thing is when I get to windows I know it will b fine, but cant get anywhere near that stage, and if i ever do i dread to shut down ever again :(

Hmm, tricky. The first thing to do in any such hardware problem is to do a physical check. Reseat the RAM and graphics card, double check the power connections, and such. After that you may be looking at a BIOS problem.

Ok update time. Just been playing around and decided to remove 1 ram stick, it didnt work, I currently have them run in dual channel in DIMMS 1 and 3. I tried moving them to 2 and 4 and now at least its booting and running windows, do you guys this think this is a temporary fix and it wont happen again? I dont get why changing the ram DIMMS would do anything, clearly it has for now.. Any ideas?

The thing is, I'm now running 4gb, am literally just logging on and shutting down now to keep testing. But so far so good, interesting.

Perhaps it was due to the OC? I thought 3.0ghz was fairly standard without increasing anything else. Am going to slowly start OC'ing to test results.

Ok guys, let me update you all:

I have a possible feeling it may be something to do with the Overclock but I'm not 100% on this.

Basically as I stated, i switched over my ram slots from DIMM 1 and 3 to DIMM 2 and 4 yesterday and it worked, i re overclocked the cpu to 3.0ghz and played games last night no problem, also tried shutting down and switching on (within the space of like 5 minutes) a few times to check it would boot, and it did, fine no problem.

The problem seems to be whenever I leave it for any sufficient amount of time. So for example last night i switched the PC off and woke up this morning, turned it on - and again no signal nothing happening at all other than fans running etc. I then switched back to DIMMS 1 and 3 and what do you know it worked again, when i checked back in the bios however the clock speed had been put back to 2.4ghz.

What I dont understand is what would the difference be between waiting 5 mins and 8 hours before switching on/off, would it possibly be the voltage not high enough (i keep it on optimum), weird motherboard?, like i said when everythings up and running it runs a dream, like at the minute for instance..

Anyone got any ideas why it's doing it, I dont fancy making a regular trip inside the pc to switch the ram DIMMS each day lol.

Any help would be great, cheers :D

Cancel the overclock first of all. No point trying to debug a system when it is clocked.

Just a thought, is the cmos jumper back to its original position?

Yea that's my plan, am going to keep it at retail clock speed and leave it off over night. There are no jumpers etc attached, the whole bios didnt reset, literally only the clock speed. Any other ideas?

You should reset the BIOS completely, and then start from there.

Sounds like a failed overclock, so you'd have to put your BIOS settings up here.

Make sure that the memory timings, speeds and voltages are what are suggested by the manufacturer.

Run memtest for a few loops.
