Inbuilt camera HDR

Do you think camera companies will include a function for auto HDR images? I.e. The camera takes 3-5 shots of the same scene then combines them to obtain the greatest range?

Not having worked with HDR (other then in CGI) I'm not sure how the whole process works with photos but hey, it could be good right?

Especially for non slr cameras for people who point and shoot, could make shooting in low light without a flash or maybe even with a flash pic as one of the range with the rest of the pics, bring up the image nicely?

Won't the sensors be capable of recording HDR in the not-so-distant future? Or have I missed the point?

ive read rumours that some of the next gen dslr`s will have a higher range, so they wouldnt need to combine different exposures

I think the D2x and D200 can already do something like this..
