To cut a long story short, i have had loads of issues with my computer over the past 1.5 years with MCE 2005. When I purchased my legit copy, I activated using the supplied key etc, no probs. I thought the whole issue with activating, is that it takes a hardware snapshot of your pc, so as to register the pc to myself etc, I even went into the trouble of sending my name address etc in the register option.

Anyway the other day, when I came to activate my MCE 2005 it came up with the key had been used too many times, please contact ms. I did this, and they asked me to enter my key again, same error. So they then asked me for the first 6 digits of the telephone generated option, something which i thought was unique to my computer, otherwise whats the point in activating, registering etc. Anyway gave them the first 6 numbers. Unfortunately, this is not a valid key, can you tell me how many copies that my Windows is installed on to which I replied 1 mine.

He then said he could not activate it and to call the helpdesk.

Peed off I hung up, and then called back, and low and behold the guy asked same questions, and activated no probs after I explained my previous call 2 mins ago.

What I have learnt? I have created a Norton Ghost image of a fresh install, so I no longer have to call MS, because there activation sucks, and does not even unique itself to my pc by what i can tell, so serves no purpose!

Rant over!

Yeah it is a pain, and best avoided. Fortunatly there are a few ways of doing that :)

I got an XP Home licence from a Junked PC and I have activated it dozens of times and never once have I had any hassles.

I also got XP Pro Retail, that I bought purely in the knowledge that I will be activating it lots of times dur to me liking to do an F&R every few weeks anyway ( I Love installing Windows, its that simple ) and I have had nothign but hassle with it.

And yes, I have also been refused and 2 minutes later its gone through too!

MS dont have a clue do they?
