I have an issue with one of my clients servers, basically the D: drive which is setup on a dell perc 4/DI controller is reporting the full size correctly but the free space is drastically wrong.

There are approx 15gb of files/folders on there and the whole virtual partition is 55.6gb but shows 266mb free, which is waaaaayyyy out.

I'm going to organise some evenign work to do an ntbackup, format the drive and copy the stuff back over but was wondering if anyone had encountered this before?

If the format doesnt work then i'll be looking at the perc controller next to see if there are any issues there.

Ah... they were enabled to do a copy of c: on to d:

I've now removed and disabled shadow copy, it complained it was in the middle of it but its still shows as being disabled, however the space hasn't free'd itself up.

Do i have to manually go in and delete?

Had to manually stop the service as i think it was in the middle of a shadow copy, but it remembered that i disabled it and then deleted all of the shadow copies.

Now the D: drive shows as 40gb free, wheeeeee!

Thanks very much cozzy :)

Glad you got it sorted.
However shadow copies can be extremely useful on a fileserver for quickly recovering files & folders when idiot users manage to delete them.
Personally I would re-enable them on the data drive & set limits and schelules accordingly.

This is the weird thing, it was setup to shadow c: which has no user data on, just operating system which is backed up anyway!
