My friend has a Netgear DG834G v3 downstairs in their computer room, and is trying to access the wireless network from his bedroom in their loft conversion.

Unfortunately the range is not good enough, and it refuses to detect the network. He recently invested in Netgears new rangemax series, but that has not helped either.

I suggested that he try setting up an access point on the first floor - am I thinking along the right lines or barking up the wrong tree here (I do not know that much about wireless networking). I recommended this product:

How hard would it be to connect this access point to his existing router via wireless and then use the internet upstairs?

You'd really want a router and AP that did WDS, but a wireless AP on a totally different channel from the router should do (but if you moved out of range of one, you'd need to sort-of-manually connect to the other).

Whats WDS?

Connecting to the other one is not a problem... he just needs to be able to access the internet from his room :)

Was about to suggest that. I was happy that I could avoid going down that route in order to connect my sister's computer in the loft to her router in the study, as it seems that the kit is a pretty expensive addition.

Actually having just looked at the product pages everything seems a bit cheaper these days.
