*** if anything can i do to increase the performance of my gigabit network
im currently running my server with an intel pro 1000 MT desktop adapter and also my main pc with the same card but they connect to a cheapo netgear gigabit switch so i cant use jumbo frame settings :(
is there anything else i can look at?
the best ive seen so far is just under 10MB/s up and 18MB/s down does this seem reasonable cos i was kinda hoping for more

Try running an FTP server and see what speeds you get with that. I've never had the time to look into it properly but with some of my PCs I get crappy speeds via gigabit when using Windows shares, yet they fly via FTP.

For example, via shares it appears to be no faster than my network at 100mbit speeds which is around 9 or 10MB/sec. When transferring via FTP I usually get around 35MB/sec - also using a cheap Netgear gigabit switch.

10MB/sec is not right for a gigabit connection at all - that's what a 100mbit connection should get.

Yeah in an ideal world with no interference, wire speed switching and good equipment both ends.

5-7MB/s is good on a 100Mb switch between two peers.

I wouldn't say that. I get roughly 9MB/sec transfer rates in my front room, between an Xbox and my old Dell Inspiron 8500 using some crappy Cat5 I've had for years. Oh yeah, and the same home Netgear gigabit switch.

Granted, on 100mbit I don't get those transfer rates to all my devices but transfers between the Xbox and my PC/laptop certainly do and they're not exactly great pieces of kit.

5-7 isn't much better than SuperG wireless (and yes this is using real world througoutput not theorical) . Usually I can get 10/11. Gigabit should get 35-40 atleast, even then, that's low.

The best way to test network speeds is Iperf.

I'd say that's about standard....~5 is what I'd expect to get to my server, from another reasonably busy server somewhere in Europe.

7 - 10 should be seen more, that's what my Netgear seems to do....earlier on today I managed around 10/11 between two standard PCs hooked up to a decent switch.

i used to get 7-9MB/s on my LAN at uni, however my 108mb wireless is 3-7MB/s

surely gig ethernet should be closer to 125MB/s ?

Get a switch that will do JFrames would be your best bet otherwise as you've found you may as well be on (good) 100mbit. To eliminate the switch as a problem try a good quality cable between the two and see what sort of speeds you get ?
