Increasing Stamina

At the moment I play 5 a side footy once per week.

I am finding that I just do not have enough stamina and my general fitness is not up to scratch.

I am a quick sprinter and beat almost all players to the ball, I am also good at standing my ground and because of my speed am able to beat most players to the ball.

The problem I have is toward the end of the match I tire and am not as fast as I would like to be.

I am happy with my weight and strength. I would like to be more toned but that's not what I am looking for right now so will leave that alone for the time being.

I was thinking of going running once or twice per day.

I have plotted out two routes. One is 1.5miles and the other 4.5miles.

Longer distances have always been a problem for me (asthma, tight chest) but I know that when I am fit the asthma is pretty much non-existant. I have an inhaler but I do not like to use it as usually end up light headed.

So, is 1.5miles a good starting distance or is it too short.

Can somebody give me a rough guide/schedule on some cardio work to improve my fitness. Not just running.

I can't really afford gym membership at the moment, but when I used to go regularly (over a year ago) I was definately a better footballer.

I have a bicycle so could use that too.

Thanks,

Chris

you might want to look at your diet a little bit, you could have some more slow release carbs in your system prematch to give you a bit of longer lasting energy.

other than that you already realise that more exercise over longer periods will help build your stamina :]

If you've already got a bike then I'd recommend getting on it and head out to Bath, it's a really nice ride, I do it quite often. From the Warmley section you should be able to get there and back in around an hour which should build your stamina up (I think it's a 26 mile round trip)
