Trying to help a friend increase his wireless coverage and l was wondering what would be the best solution. At the moment he has a router in the 2nd floor and he only receives a wireless signal at that floor only. He wants to have wireless access on the first floor as well.

Would any of these two products allow him to do so?

1. TP-Link 150Mbps Wireless Lite N Access Point (TL-WA701ND) [TL-WA701ND]

2. Edimax EW-7416APn 300Mbps Wireless Access Point / Range Extender [EW-7416APn]

From what l understand these devices will work in conjunction with his current router and boost the signal but l was wondering if they do actually work. If the above two products will do the job, which one do you recommend?

Thanks in advance.

It just comes down to if the router he has will work with either of those, they should do, And yes repeaters work fine. Will you be connecting them via ethernet?

Those are wireless N access points. There are two situations where they could help.

Firstly, if your friend's router is wireless G, then connecting the N access point to it should give better range, if the wireless adapter in his computer is also N-compatible. If it's not, he'd need a new adapter as well - otherwise, the connection would just run in G mode and there would be no improvement.

Secondly, if he was able to connect the access point to his router with a long cable and position it closer to the 1st floor, that should extend the coverage as well.
