This is where I'm currently at:

Coolermaster CM690 Dominator
GA-X58A-UD5 mobo
i7 920 (3.8GHz OC)
GTX 670 Windforce 3x
6GB Kingston DDR3
Noctua NH-D14 cpu cooler
XFX Pro 750w PSU

I'm looking for a reasonably priced (around £250) CPU that could be safely OC to around the 4.2 - 4.5GHz mark (bearing in mind compatibility with the above)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

would be a waste of money to do anythnig but keep your current CPU or upgrade motherboard to socket 1155 at the same time and get a 3570k/3770k depending on your needs. I7 920's still good for a while yet anyway.

Yeh, sell your 920 and motherboard. Buy new motherboard/CPU combination in my view.

If you can wait then your system will not be bottlenecking on CPU very much if anything so I'd wait until Haswell comes out.

If you must upgrade now, just get one of the ~£100 Z77 motherboards and either a 2500K or 3570K CPU - that's almost within your £250 budget.

Well within budget actually. You'll still have half decent resale value on your cpu and mobo. So would only cost you 100-150 at a guesstimate.

I recently upgraded my 920 to a 950 so it would run cooler with my small overclock. I kept my eye out for a second hand CPU and got a good price. Once I sell my 920 I should make most of the money back.

The 950 runs cooler than my previous 920 which ran hot.

I'm not suggesting you do the same but it's worked out well for me. I'm skipping Ivy and waiting for the next gen.

Personally I would say it's best to wait for Haswell if you want to see some real improvements. Overclock the 920 to 4ghz and it'll last you for a good long while.

And if all goes well then Haswell will go back to a better thermal interface than ivy bridge, and bring better temps and overclocking potential with it.
