Does turning of this function of the main hdd really do anything ?

Speeds up the hard drive a little bit - normally indexing is done when the PC is not doing anything.
I normally turn it off (and System Restore) from habbit rather than it affecting performance. Depends how much you search your HD for stuff though if you regularly do then keep it on as the search speeds are much better.
