Hi, I'm not looking to get into a huge debate about this, but I was wondering if anybody knew of a good historically factual book about this?

What with it being the 60th anniversary and all, I really dont have a clue abuot what brought it about and would like to learn.

Muslims in India wanted own country - started fighting with seeks until the ruling UK gov gave in and granted them land in the NW of india and let them rename it.

Short version and lots missed, but thats the jist of it.

Isn't the word Pakistan made up of the areas the country occupies?
No afaik "****" means "clean" and "stan" is "the land of" so Pakistan is the land of the clean.

It is a very clear example of how differing beliefs can utterly fail to become this multicultural harmonius utopian ideal that we are fed.
These people shared that land for centuries yet because of religious differences and resultant fighting they ended up splitting a country in two.

Yet of course the UK is sure we can all live happily ever after......

You mean like India, Japan, South Korea and all of the other multi-faith countries?
India has had plenty of religious bloodshed.

Japan? Got any figures for how "multi faith" japan is? Same for South Korea....

All the other multi faith countries.... what like bosnia? Shall we talk about Darfur?

How about we put away the childish arguments of who's god is better than your god, as they are the same one anyway...

Then again, im sure we would all be killing each other for something else soon enough.

As for the way the country was divided, never was going to be an easy option, the thing i didnt like was the way they went about it as if killing until we get what we want is the way to start a country that is meant to follow a peaceful way of life, lol, then again, looking at most religions, arnt they all as bad as each other ie, we come in peace - BLAM BLAM....

Still, im sure there are more on here who know more of what went on, im just going of what i have read and seen on TV as well as traveling to both India and Pakastan oo and Nepal...

ColiN - lets live in peace and see how it feels? and before anyone presumes, im not a follower of any, infact according to the census, im a jedi knight!

TBH, I don't know much about it either - but I would say read what you do objectively as history has always been distorted to suit other purposes.

There are many who lay the bitter feelings between the two and the travesty of Kashmir at the feet of Mountbaten (or whatever his name was) - of course you need to decide who's version of history is correct - the colonialist's or the colonised?

The only multi-faith country I know of that actually works is Oman. Its success is no doubt largely due to the dominance of a more tolerant form of Islam. In addition to those figures I'm almost certain there has been a (albeit small) Jewish population living there for many hundreds of years.

It's a long time since I was there though so I don't know if everything is quite so rosy these days.

Hmm...that's very interesting.

basically british empire invades takes everything from India, gives a little infrastructure back....

Muslims want thier own country, India wants India back....

British get pencil draw line through India...forgot to draw a line all the way through left a few empty spots (kashmir) which both countries fight over to this day...

All in all well done British Empire :D

LOL yup thats basically really the gist of it, the british put into motion the partition after invading India. Obviously there more to it than that but suffice to say that if the British had kept their noses out at that time, then im pretty certain India and Pakistan still would be one nation.
