Running with Rifles is an indie game in beta that I discovered today. It's brilliant! It plays a lot like Counter Strike - urban settings, semi-realistic weaponry, one stray bullet can kill you etc - but the viewpoint and some other aspects are more like Cannon Fodder. For those too young to remember, that means an overhead view and squad-based gameplay.
Unlike either of those games, the objective in RWR is to take over the whole map which is split across a dozen or so objectives. You capture the objectives then move on, all while the enemy are doing the same to you. Army sizes can be huge, well over 100 (with bots filling in as necessary on multiplayer). As you score kills you gain in rank, which means the AI soldiers start following you and you can issue orders to them.
As usual, a video can do a far better job of showing the game off, so feast your eyes:
You can crouch, go prone, throw grenades, call in artillery, vault fences, climb onto buildings, use sniper rifles, knife your enemy, and more. It's in active development and they've just added jeeps.
I haven't tried multiplayer yet but it looks awesome. Just training with bots has been fantastic so far. If you're at all interested in shooting people in the face, you really must try this. There's even a demo at the website linked at the start of this post.
To get in on the beta will cost £6 via Desura or through BMT on the dev's website.
